The Period Company Review: Is Affordable Period Underwear Worth Switching To?

Reusable period underwear has moved from a niche product to a mainstream option in only a few years. It promises fewer pads and tampons, less waste and more comfort, but the early brands often charged premium prices that made building a full rotation expensive. The Period Company, which brands itself as Period., focuses on lower prices, a wide size range and simple styles, with ranges also marketed for postpartum use, perimenopause and light bladder leaks.
I would judge period underwear on absorbency for your heaviest days, fit and comfort through a long day, and the cost of building enough pairs for a full cycle. Returns are very restricted in this category, so getting the size and absorbency right first time matters.
Styles and prices
The core High Waisted style comes in several fabrics and absorbency levels. The Organic Cotton heavy-flow version was listed at $14 and is described as absorbing up to nine tampons' worth of flow. The SportyStretch heavy version was $10.50, with its headline saying eight to ten tampons and its absorbency section saying up to nine. Medium-flow options in cotton and microfibre were $10.50 and $12, rated at up to four regular tampons. An Extra Coverage organic cotton style with a longer gusset, intended for postpartum use, was $18.
Those prices are noticeably lower than many competitors, which makes a full set more realistic.
Sizing and fit
Sizes run from XS to 6X, which is a wider range than many brands offer, and the FAQ says the underwear runs true to size. A size chart is linked from product pages. Because fit affects leak protection, I would measure rather than rely on the size you usually buy, especially for heavy-flow styles.
How long they last in a day and over years
The FAQ gives an average of about eight hours on a heavier flow day, with a range of three to fourteen hours depending on flow. Over time, the company says a pair can last anywhere from two to ten years depending on care.
Care instructions are simple: rinse for a few seconds, then hand wash or machine wash, avoid bleach, tumble dry on low or hang to dry, and never dry clean. Fabric softener is a common cause of reduced absorbency in this category, so I would skip it.
Testing claims
The FAQ says fabrics are pre-tested by Intertek for California Proposition 65 and a PFAS panel, with UL consumer testing and a claimed PFAS NOT DETECTED validation for all products. PFAS concerns have affected the period underwear industry, so it is reassuring to see testing described specifically. Those are the company's statements, and you can ask for the reports.
Returns are limited to exchanges
The returns page states that returns are not accepted because of the nature of the product. Size or style exchanges are possible within 30 days of delivery if the underwear is unopened, unworn and unwashed, with return shipping paid by the customer. Refunds, where they apply, are issued as a digital gift card that never expires. Discounted items and international orders are final sale.
There is one confusing line about multi-pair orders, which mentions trying one pair. Check that wording before opening a pack.
Shipping
Standard shipping is free within the continental US on orders over $70, with $10 flat for Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico and $17 for Canada plus duties. USPS First Class takes one to six business days domestically. HSA and FSA payments are accepted through Flex.
Build a rotation on a budget
Most people need several pairs to cover a cycle, washing as they go. For illustration, six heavy-flow pairs at $10.50 cost $63. If they last three years, that is $21 a year, or less than $2 per cycle. That is a budgeting example, not a guarantee of lifespan.
My verdict
The Period Company looks like one of the more affordable ways to try reusable period underwear, with a wide size range, clear absorbency figures and specific PFAS testing claims. The exchange-only policy means you should choose carefully and start small. I have not worn these products, so comfort, leak protection and long-term durability remain untested here.
If I were starting, I would buy two pairs in the absorbency I need most, wear them through a full cycle and then build out the rotation. Period underwear earns its price through months of comfortable, leak-free days, not through the lowest price per pair.
