Good coffee at home has become a small daily luxury for many people, and specialty roasters have followed them online. The appeal is simple: freshly roasted beans delivered before the last bag runs out. Stumptown Coffee Roasters, founded in Portland, Oregon, is one of the best-known American specialty roasters, with cafes in Portland, Los Angeles and New York and coffee sold in grocery stores, as well as whole-bean and ground coffee, cold coffee and brewing gear online.

I would judge a coffee subscription on freshness, flexibility and the price per cup compared with what you drink now. A subscription is only good value if the coffee arrives at the pace you actually drink it.

The coffees

Hair Bender is the signature blend and the one most people know. It was listed at $19 for 12 ounces, also available in a 5-pound bag, with tasting notes of citrus, dark chocolate and raisin, and it is described as the house espresso blend. Holler Mountain is another blend, with citrus, caramel and berry jam notes. Single origins included a Guatemala El Injerto Bourbon with milk chocolate, orange and caramel notes, and an Ethiopia Mordecofe with nectarine, melon and jasmine, both in 10.5-ounce bags.

Single origins usually come in smaller bags at higher prices per ounce, reflecting rarer coffees. Subscription-only options, Roaster's Pick and Blend Shuffle, rotate through different coffees.

Blend or single origin?

Blends are designed to taste consistent and work well with milk, which makes Hair Bender a sensible choice for lattes and flat whites. Single origins show more distinctive flavours, often brighter and fruitier, and are best enjoyed black through a pour-over or filter. If you are new to specialty coffee, start with a blend and add a single origin to compare.

The product page describes Hair Bender's roast using a scale from light and bright to dark and bittersweet, while the homepage gives it a numeric roast level, so read the tasting notes rather than relying on a single number.

How the subscription works

Subscriptions can be delivered every one, two, three, four, five, six or eight weeks, and you can pause, skip or cancel at any time from your account or by contacting support. Subscriptions renew automatically and charge the card on file. The site advertises 15 percent off the first five subscription shipments with a code.

Choosing the right frequency is the key to value. As a rough guide, a 12-ounce bag makes around 20 to 25 cups of filter coffee. If you drink two cups a day, that is roughly a bag every one and a half to two weeks.

Freshness and storage

The FAQ recommends storing coffee in an airtight container at room temperature and using it within two to three weeks of the roast date. Whole beans stay fresher than pre-ground coffee, so grinding just before brewing is worth it if you have a grinder. Avoid the fridge, where moisture and odours can affect flavour.

Shipping and returns

Shipping is free on orders over $45, according to the banner, while subscription product pages mention free shipping for life on subscriptions. The two statements may both be true, but I would check the shipping line at checkout. I could not read the return policy page, which returned an access error, so I could not confirm terms for unwanted or damaged orders. Coffee is a consumable, so returns of opened bags are generally unlikely.

Cost per cup

For illustration, a $19 bag that makes 22 cups costs about 86 cents per cup. With a 15 percent subscription discount, that drops to around 73 cents, which compares well with a coffee shop. That is a budgeting example, not a quoted price.

My verdict

Stumptown offers well-known blends and interesting single origins with a genuinely flexible subscription that you can pause, skip or cancel, plus a solid free-shipping threshold. The return policy I could not read and the slightly different shipping messages are the only points to check. I have not tasted these coffees, so flavour and roast consistency remain untested here.

If I were subscribing, I would start with Hair Bender for milk drinks or a single origin for black coffee, set a delivery frequency that matched my drinking, and adjust after the first month. A subscription earns its price when every bag is finished fresh, not when an extra one sits in the cupboard.
