A blunt kitchen knife is more than an irritation. It slips on tomato skins, crushes herbs and needs more force, which is exactly when accidents happen. Sharpening at home solves that, but the choice of stones can feel bewildering. UKSG Tools is a Ukrainian supplier specialising in diamond and CBN sharpening stones, guided sharpening systems, polishing pastes and a selection of Ukrainian-made knives, shipped worldwide from Poltava.

I would judge a sharpening setup by the knives you own, how often you sharpen and how much you want to learn. Superabrasive stones cut quickly and stay flat, but they cost more than traditional whetstones, and they are only worth it if they will actually be used.

What UKSG sells

The core catalogue is 6 x 1 inch stones designed for guided sharpening systems, made by Ukrainian manufacturers such as PDTools and KDTU. When I checked, PDT Premium Silver CBN stones with a vitrified-metal bond were listed at $116 each, PDT Expert Pro resin-bond CBN stones at $68, KDTU hybrid CBN stones at $82 and hybrid diamond stones at $72. Sets bring the price per stone down, with a six-stone Silver set at $650 and a three-stone hunting and bushcraft set at $330.

Smaller items include CBN polishing pastes at $12.49, honing oil at $12.20, a stone cleaner at $11, plywood storage cases from $26 and the TRYZUB guided sharpening system at $640.

Diamond, CBN and bond types explained simply

Diamond and CBN, or cubic boron nitride, are superabrasives that cut much faster than natural or ceramic stones. CBN is often preferred for hard steels, while diamond works on a wide range of steels. The bond holds the abrasive in place: resin bonds tend to give a smoother feel and finish, while metal and vitrified bonds are typically more aggressive and longer-lasting.

For most home cooks, a coarse, medium and fine stone are enough. Very high grits such as 5,000 or 10,000 are for polishing and are best added later, once you know you enjoy the process.

Guided system or freehand?

The 6 x 1 inch format is designed for guided systems that hold the knife at a fixed angle while the stone moves along the edge. That makes consistent angles much easier for beginners, but it means buying or already owning a compatible system. Check that the stone dimensions fit your system before ordering.

If you prefer freehand sharpening on a bench stone, larger formats are more practical. UKSG's range leans towards guided systems, so it suits people who have already chosen that route.

Shipping times and duties

Orders ship from Ukraine using UkrPoshta, Nova Poshta or DHL. Standard shipping takes 12 to 16 days for orders under $200, express EMS takes seven to twelve days on orders over $200, and a faster four to seven-day option is available for a fee. Items not in stock can take 30 days because they need to be produced. Free shipping applies to orders over $200, and the site advertises no US duty, although other countries may charge import fees.

That means you should plan ahead. If you need a stone next week, this is not the right shop, but if you are building a setup over time, the wait is manageable.

Returns

Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery for unused items in original packaging. Customers pay return shipping unless the item is defective or incorrect, and returns need prior approval. Damaged or wrong items should be reported with photos, and UKSG offers a replacement, refund or store credit. Defective goods are fully replaced.

For illustration, a $68 resin-bond stone used to sharpen a few kitchen knives twice a month for five years works out to under 60 cents per session. A $650 set used the same way costs about $5.40 each time. That is a budgeting example, not a durability guarantee.

My verdict

UKSG Tools looks like a specialist source for people who use guided sharpening systems and want fast-cutting superabrasive stones at prices that are competitive for the category. The long international shipping times and strict returns mean it suits planned purchases rather than urgent ones. I have not used these stones, so cutting speed, flatness and lifespan remain untested here.

If I were starting, I would buy a coarse and fine stone that fit my guided system, learn on cheaper knives first and add polishing grits later. A sharpening stone earns its price through years of sharp, safe knives, not through the number of grits in the box.
