Single-serve coffee machines solved the morning rush but created a rubbish problem. Billions of plastic and aluminium pods end up in landfill every year, and many households feel a twinge of guilt every time they press the button. Tayst Coffee was built around that discomfort, selling pods for Keurig machines, capsules for Nespresso machines, ground and whole-bean coffee, and a few brewers and accessories, with compostability at the centre of its pitch.

I would judge a switch like this on two equally important questions: does the coffee taste good enough to replace what you drink now, and does the compostable claim hold up in the way you will actually dispose of the pods? A greener pod that sits in your bin next to the plastic ones does not change much.

What Tayst sells

The main product is a box of Keurig-compatible pods, built by mixing and matching any four bags. The product page says at least four products are required, so you are buying in a reasonable quantity rather than a single sleeve. Discovery boxes are also listed for Keurig, Nespresso and ground coffee, along with a mystery add-on for $10. Per-bag prices did not load when I checked, so look at the cart total before deciding.

The coffee is described as small-batch roasted. I did not see roast levels or origin details listed for each blend on the pages I read, which is information I would want before ordering a full box.

The compostable claim

The homepage says every pod and lid is designed to return safely to the earth within months, and the Keurig page describes the pod as made from organic materials. No certification body is named on those pages, and an asterisk next to the compostable label did not have a visible footnote.

In practice, compostable packaging usually breaks down best in industrial composting facilities, and home compost heaps vary a lot. Check whether your local food waste collection accepts compostable coffee pods. If it does not, ask Tayst how its pods perform in a home compost bin before assuming they will disappear.

Subscription or one-off?

The pod box can be bought once or on a subscription that ships every four weeks with a 15 percent discount. First subscription orders include a free campfire mug, which the page values at $18. The product page says you can change, skip or cancel at any time.

I would start with a one-off box or a discovery box to test flavours, then subscribe once you know which blends you like. A subscription is only good value when every bag gets drunk.

Machine compatibility

Tayst sells separate products for Keurig and Nespresso machines, so make sure you choose the right format. Within each system, check which models are supported. Newer Keurig machines and the Nespresso Vertuo line use different technology from older or Original-line machines, and pods made for one will not work in the other.

Policies I could not confirm

The return policy page did not load when I tried it, so I could not confirm shipping costs, return windows or what happens if a box arrives damaged. Coffee is a consumable, and many coffee companies do not accept returns of opened bags. Read the policy at checkout, especially before setting up a subscription.

The homepage also mentions awards and a large number of customers. Those are the company's own statements.

The cost per cup

Pods are convenient but rarely cheap. Work out the price per pod in your cart and compare it with what you pay now, whether that is supermarket pods or a coffee shop on the way to work.

For illustration, if a pod costs 75 cents and you drink two a day, that is about $45 a month. On the 15 percent subscription discount, it falls to around $38. That is a budgeting example, not a quoted price.

My verdict

Tayst Coffee offers a convenient way to keep using a pod machine while cutting down on plastic, with flexible boxes, a subscription discount and both Keurig and Nespresso formats. The unnamed compostability certification and the policies I could not read mean it is worth asking a few questions first. I have not tasted these coffees, so flavour, strength and how well the pods compost remain untested here.

If I were switching, I would try a discovery box, check my local composting rules and only then commit to a subscription. A compostable pod earns its price when it makes a coffee you enjoy and actually ends up in the compost, not when it simply carries a greener label.
