An underwater scooter is one of those gadgets that sounds like pure fun until you look at the price. Being pulled along a reef without kicking, covering more ground on a snorkel or keeping up with faster swimmers can genuinely change a holiday. But scooters range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, and the right one depends on how deep you go and how long you stay in. Sublue, established in 2013, sells underwater scooters, a robotic pool cleaner and accessories.

I would choose a sea scooter by depth rating, runtime and weight first, then consider speed. Battery rules for travel and the store's return terms also matter, because these are expensive items that do not always suit everyone.

The range

At the top, the VAPOR Pro was listed at $4,099. It is rated to 40 metres, offers 249 newtons of thrust, four speed modes from 6 to 12 km/h, up to 60 minutes per battery with two batteries included and a 1.5-hour fast charge, and weighs 8.7 kg. The VAPOR starts from $2,999, the Navbow+ and Navbow from $1,199 and $999, the MixPro at $649, the Mix from $399 and the compact EZ at $349. Spare VAPOR Pro batteries cost $749.

The lower-priced models suit snorkelling and pool fun, while the VAPOR range targets scuba divers and boat owners. I only read detailed specifications for the VAPOR Pro, so check depth and runtime figures on each product page.

Safety first

The VAPOR Pro page says it is only suitable for healthy, skilled swimmers over 16. It also advises not running the motor out of water for more than ten seconds, never changing the battery in the water and never charging below 0 degrees Celsius. The scooter is positively buoyant in seawater, which means it floats if released.

A scooter can pull you deeper or further than planned, so divers should keep the same depth discipline as without one, and snorkellers should stay near the surface and close to shore or a boat.

Travelling with batteries

Lithium batteries for scooters are subject to airline rules based on their watt-hour rating. The VAPOR Pro batteries are 384.8 Wh each, which exceeds the limits most airlines accept for passenger luggage without special approval. The pages I read did not cover airline rules, so check with your airline before planning to fly with a scooter, or consider renting one at your destination.

Shipping and returns

Shipping is free within the contiguous US on orders over $100, taking two to seven days, with high surcharges for Hawaii and Alaska. European orders ship from Amsterdam with duties included. Unopened, unused items can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Opened but unused items carry a restocking fee of 10 to 50 percent, and used items without a quality issue are not accepted. Payment processing fees from 2.5 percent are also deducted on refunds.

Those terms mean you cannot really test a scooter in the water and send it back for a change of mind. Choose the model carefully before ordering.

Warranty

The warranty policy covers the VAPOR main unit and motor for 24 months and the battery and charger for 12 months, while Mix, MixPro, Navbow and Navbow+ models are covered for 12 months. The VAPOR Pro page advertises a two-year warranty, which applies to the main unit rather than the battery. A regional service fee of up to 20 percent may apply.

For illustration, a $649 MixPro used for 20 hours a year over three years works out to about $11 per hour in the water. A $4,099 VAPOR Pro used 40 hours a year for three years costs about $34 per hour. That is a budgeting example, not a durability guarantee.

My verdict

Sublue offers a broad range of sea scooters, from affordable snorkelling models to capable dive scooters with detailed specifications and duties-inclusive European shipping. The steep fees on opened returns, the shorter battery warranty and the airline restrictions on large batteries are the points to weigh. I have not used these scooters, so thrust, handling and battery life remain untested here.

If I were buying, I would choose by depth and runtime, check airline rules for my trips and consider renting first if possible. A sea scooter earns its price through many hours of underwater exploring, not through its top speed in a brochure.
