TOPOAK Review: Is a Hard-Shell Rooftop Tent Right for Your Vehicle?

In this article
A rooftop tent changes how a road trip feels. Instead of hunting for flat ground and wrestling with poles in the dark, you park, unlatch the shell and climb into a ready-made bed. That convenience comes at a price, though, both in money and in what your vehicle can safely carry. TOPOAK sells hard-shell rooftop tents, vehicle awnings and camp accessories aimed at overlanders and anyone who camps from their car.
I would treat a rooftop tent as a vehicle modification as much as a camping purchase. The most important questions are about your roof rack, your vehicle's load rating and how often you will actually use it, before comparing fabrics or mattress thickness.
The tent range
TOPOAK's hard-shell tents include the Galaxy Pro, listed at $1,818 against a regular $1,968, along with the Stellar, Vision and Galaxy 1.0 at the same sale price and the Nebula at $1,969. The Galaxy Light, at $1,318, is marketed as weighing only 110 pounds with a slim 4.94-inch profile. Awnings include a 180-degree model at $649 and 270-degree awnings at $649 and $849.
The homepage also promoted bundles with sleep gear, so compare the bundle price against the parts you actually need.
Inside the Galaxy Pro
The Galaxy Pro uses an aluminium hard shell and a honeycomb aluminium floor, with 300gsm poly-cotton blackout canvas and an anti-condensation coating. The rainfly is 300D ripstop polyester rated at 8000 mm, and the mattress is three inches thick, combining memory foam and support foam. The gas struts carry a lifetime warranty. Summarised specifications suggest a weight of about 165 pounds and space for two adults and a child.
Blackout fabric is a genuine advantage in summer, when daylight arrives early. An anti-condensation coating helps, but ventilation still matters in cold weather.
Roof load and fitment come first
The product page links to a compatibility guide and installation instructions. The standard mounting kit suits crossbars 1 to 2 inches thick and 2.4 to 3.5 inches wide, spaced 30 to 60 inches apart. Most vehicle roofs are typically rated around 150 pounds dynamic load, according to the summarised text, while the Galaxy Pro alone may weigh more than that.
That is why I would check the dynamic load rating of both your vehicle roof and your roof rack before anything else. A lighter model such as the Galaxy Light may be the only sensible option for some cars. The instructions also remind owners to check nuts before each trip and never to travel with people inside the tent.
Delivery and pickup
Shipping is free to the contiguous US, taking six to ten business days, and free to Canada and the EU with longer lead times. Alaska carries a $599 freight surcharge. Tents and awnings ship by freight with curbside or driveway delivery, and PO boxes are not accepted. Collecting from the warehouse in Eastvale, California, saves $299.
Plan for two or more people to lift the tent onto the roof. A box of this weight is not a one-person job.
Warranty and returns
The warranty policy lists three years on the rooftop tent's main structure, lifetime cover for the gas struts, one year on accessories, two years on the 270-degree awning structure and one year on awning rooms. Problems must be reported within seven days of delivery with photos. Wear, cosmetic changes, misuse and modifications are excluded, and cover applies to original buyers from the official site.
Returns are mentioned as within 30 days of receipt after contacting the company, but I could not read the full refund terms. For freight items, ask about return shipping costs before ordering.
Cost per night
For illustration, an $1,818 tent used for 20 nights a year over five years works out to about $18 per night, before roof bars. Used for five nights a year, the same tent costs over $70 per night. That is a budgeting example, not a durability guarantee.
My verdict
TOPOAK looks like a well-specified choice for regular road trippers who already have, or will fit, a suitable roof rack, with good materials and a clear warranty breakdown. The weight of the Galaxy Pro and the unread refund details are the points to check first. I have not slept in these tents, so comfort, condensation and ease of opening remain untested here.
If I were buying, I would confirm my vehicle and rack ratings, consider the lighter model if close to the limit, and plan installation with help. A rooftop tent earns its price through many easy nights on the road, not through a single summer trip.
