The Digitize Center Review: Is a Mail-In Kit the Easiest Way to Save Old Tapes and Photos?

Most families have a box somewhere: VHS tapes of birthdays, camcorder cassettes from holidays, envelopes of prints and a carousel of slides nobody has projected in decades. The problem is not just nostalgia. Tapes degrade, players disappear and photos fade. Mail-in digitising services offer a simple fix, and The Digitize Center, based in Chicago, is one of them, handling tapes, film, photos, slides, negatives, audio and discs.
I would judge a service like this by how clearly it prices the work, how it protects your originals in transit and what happens to the digital files afterwards. Sending irreplaceable memories through the post is a leap of trust, so the details matter.
How the kits work
You buy a kit sized by the number of items, pack your media into the box and send it back. One item means one tape, reel or disc, while every 25 photos, slides or negatives count as one item, and you can mix formats in one box. When I checked, a 2-item kit was $29.99, a 10-item kit $139.99, the 20-item kit $274.99 and a 40-item kit $544.99. Extra items beyond the kit are $17.99 each, invoiced after arrival.
That works out to roughly $14 per item on the larger kits. Counting carefully before ordering avoids surprise invoices.
Output and quality
Finished files can be delivered to the cloud, on a USB drive or on CD and DVD, and the site says you can choose as many outputs as you like, although I did not see prices for the physical formats. The FAQ gives photo prints at about 300 to 400 DPI, slides and negatives at roughly 3000 by 5000 pixels, and most VHS at 480p, which reflects the original tape quality rather than a limitation of the service.
An optional AI enhancement called Eclipse can upscale video up to 1080p. Its price was not stated on the pages I read, so check before adding it. Upscaling can make old footage look smoother, but it cannot restore detail that was never recorded.
Your originals and your files
The FAQ says every original comes back to you along with the digital copies, and the company says it has never lost a package or item. Return shipping is described as free. I did not find details of transit insurance, so for truly irreplaceable media, consider sending the most precious items in smaller batches.
Digital files are backed up for only 30 days after the order is finished, so you need to download everything within that window. A paid Digital Memory Backup option keeps files on the company's servers year-round. I would download the files, then store copies in at least two places, such as a computer and a separate cloud service.
Refunds and cancellations
The refund policy accepts returns within 30 days of the order date. Before the kit ships, a cancellation gets a full refund including shipping. After shipping but before your media arrives, you are refunded less shipping. Once the company has your items, or after 30 days, you cannot cancel. Media that cannot be transferred is refunded at the transfer price, though return shipping on such orders is not covered, and unplayable media can be reviewed or re-transferred without an extra fee.
A 100 percent satisfaction guarantee is also advertised, without a time limit stated.
Turnaround
Standard processing takes a few weeks, with a paid processing upgrade available. If you want digital copies for a specific event, such as a wedding anniversary or memorial, order well in advance. Support is available by phone daily from 9am to 5pm Pacific time.
For illustration, a 20-item kit at $274.99 covering 15 tapes and 125 photos works out to under $14 per item. Compared with buying a working VCR and capture card, that may be simpler for most families. That is a budgeting example, not a quote for your collection.
My verdict
The Digitize Center offers a clear, kit-based way to digitise mixed family media, with returned originals, free return shipping and multiple output choices. The short 30-day file backup window, unpriced extras and unstated insurance details are worth noting before sending anything precious. I have not used the service, so scan quality, colour accuracy and turnaround remain untested here.
If I were ordering, I would count items carefully, send the most important media first, download files the day they arrive and back them up twice. Digitising earns its price when memories are safely preserved and easy to share, not when a box of tapes simply moves from one cupboard to another.
