Domestic Appliance Guard review: compare appliance cover, early claim fees, repair limits, replacement contributions and cancellation terms before choosing a plan.
Domestic Appliance Guard offers appliance, boiler and related home service plans in the UK. A fixed regular payment can make household budgeting feel simpler, but the advertised monthly starting price tells only part of the story. The useful questions are which appliance is actually registered, what happens when it fails, how much you may pay during an early claim and whether leaving the plan creates an outstanding balance.
This desk review uses the official appliance cover page, FAQs, boiler information and the appliance terms linked from Important Documents, checked on November 4, 2026. We have not bought a plan, booked an engineer or tested a claim. The cover illustrates service categories using an official site image; it does not depict a repair we observed. Domestic Appliance Guard review: a service contract with conditions
The linked appliance terms describe the plan as a contract for services rather than an insurance product, and say insurance regulation does not apply to that plan. This is the provider's description of the contract, not an independent regulatory assessment. Do not assume that a familiar cover label means it has the same conditions or protections as another product you have used. Read the exact agreement offered to you.
The terms and your personalised certificate work together. Check the appliance list, address, start and renewal dates, claim limits and payment schedule. A broad marketing statement about any age or model is not a substitute for acceptance of your particular appliance. The terms require a working product at the start and impose conditions on ownership, domestic use, safe access and maintenance. If yours is a rental property or shared accommodation, obtain explicit confirmation of the appropriate plan.
Appliance cover: starting price is not the household total
The appliance page advertises prices from £3.50 per month and describes parts and labour for approved repairs, repeated call-outs and a £1,000 claim limit. It also advertises tiered multi-appliance discounts. Treat the starting figure as an invitation to obtain a quote, not a price for every appliance or an entire kitchen. Confirm which machines are included and how each contributes to the overall bill.
For illustration, an unchanged £3.50 monthly charge totals £42 over twelve months. Five appliances at that starting amount would be £210 before any applicable discount, but this arithmetic is not a five-appliance quote. The actual price and discount depend on the accepted basket and offer. Ask for both the annual total and each renewal amount in writing, then compare the cost with the age, value and existing protection of your own equipment.
Early claim charges deserve attention
The current FAQ says an appliance claim within the first sixty days attracts a £150 fee, with £250 within the first ninety days for an American-style fridge freezer. The linked appliance PDF also refers to televisions in its ninety-day wording and explains that timing is measured from product registration, with an additional verification provision for some televisions. Ask which rule applies to the exact item rather than assuming the clock always starts with the first payment.
These charges make immediate cover different from an immediate fee-free repair. As a simple illustration, a £150 early fee added to twelve payments of £3.50 would total £192 for that year, assuming that quoted rate remained unchanged. That excludes other possible costs and is not a prediction of an approved claim. A product already faulty before the plan begins should not be treated as newly protected merely because payments have started.
Unlimited requests still have approval and monetary limits
The offer's reference to unlimited repairs concerns the number of requests, not an unlimited spend on any fault. The terms put approval and the certificate's limits at the centre of the process. You need to report the problem and provide the requested details. Ask what happens if a repair estimate exceeds the limit, parts cannot be obtained or the provider decides the appliance is beyond economical repair.
Use the provider's approved repair route before arranging paid work yourself. The terms restrict unauthorised repairs and allow a £75 security payment when coverage is uncertain, reimbursed if the fault is subsequently confirmed as covered. That is a separate issue from the early claim fee. Clarify possible charges before the visit, including access problems, a missed appointment or a visit where no fault is found.
Replacement contribution is not an automatic new appliance
The sales page advertises a replacement contribution up to £1,000. The linked PDF gives more detail: replacement or settlement is discretionary, may be offered through vouchers or a selected retailer, and uses age-related contribution percentages. It lists 100% under three years, 80% under six, 60% under nine and 20% over nine. Confirm how the valuation, age band and certificate limit combine in your own agreement.
The PDF also says that without detailed evidence of age the contribution can be capped at 20% unless proof of purchase is supplied. That is worth reconciling with the FAQ's simpler statement that a receipt is not needed to make a claim. Making a request and obtaining the highest replacement contribution are different matters. Keep purchase records if available and ask how the age will be established if they are missing.
Delivery, installation and disposal can remain your responsibility, and the terms refer to the remaining annual balance becoming due at replacement or settlement. Before accepting an offer, request the full calculation and what you would still owe. A contribution towards an appliance is not the same as a fully installed replacement with every associated cost covered.
Exclusions can change the value of the plan
The appliance document excludes several categories, including routine maintenance, cosmetic damage, accidental damage and problems already covered by another guarantee. It also limits cover for some removable parts and accessories. This is not an exhaustive list. Compare your main concern with the actual exclusions: someone worried about a cracked glass surface or everyday cleaning may need a different solution from someone budgeting for an eligible mechanical breakdown.
Check your manufacturer guarantee and any existing retailer or household protection before paying for overlapping service. Record model and serial information and make sure the appliance can be accessed safely for inspection. If it is built in, ask who pays to remove or reinstate surrounding fittings. A claim limit may be useful while still leaving meaningful out-of-pocket costs.
Boiler plans follow a different timetable
The boiler page advertises a starting price of £9.75 per month, annual servicing and different levels of cover. It lists a thirty-day initial claim exclusion and says oil or LPG boilers carry an additional monthly charge. It also distinguishes repair limits from a contribution towards replacement. Do not transfer the appliance plan's early-fee arrangement or £1,000 figure to a boiler quote.
Compare the selected tier's included and excluded systems rather than reading the most extensive headline as applying to the lowest-priced option. If annual servicing is your priority, check when it can be scheduled and what happens if inspection finds an existing fault. For a landlord, request the separate details for the property and certification you need. We did not inspect boiler safety work or verify local engineer availability.
Cancellation: monthly payment need not mean monthly freedom
The linked appliance terms describe a fixed-term agreement and automatic renewal unless cancelled. They provide an initial fourteen-day cooling-off period, with conditions when work has already been performed. Outside that period, the document says the remaining contract balance can be payable. Therefore, do not assume that paying monthly allows you to stop after one month without further liability.
The current FAQ directs cancellation requests through My Account or customer support and says the team will explain any amount still due. The PDF contains an older-looking contact number alongside its detailed cancellation wording. Ask for the current applicable document, the effective cancellation date and a written balance calculation. Cancelling a bank instruction alone does not establish that the service contract has ended.
Who may find the plan useful?
The service may appeal to an eligible household that wants a managed repair route and understands the quote, early fees and contribution limits. It is less comfortable for someone expecting cover for a fault already present, unrestricted accidental-damage protection or a guaranteed brand-new replacement. Reporting a claim online at any time is also different from an engineer being available immediately at every address.
Before buying, ask for the accepted appliance list, full annual price, early claim rules, exclusions, replacement calculation and cancellation balance terms. Compare those with a one-off repair quote and your ability to budget for repairs independently.
